2011 Tony Awards Predictions: Best Featured Actress in a Musical

In addition to my post below, I am also beginning by Tony Award Predictions series today. The first category I will be covering if Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

1. Laura Benanti, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

Laura Benanti gave a BRILLIANT performance as Candela in the now-closed musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Thanks to the spring release of the original cast recording, the best aspects of the show are being remembered this awards season. Benanti’s comedic performance (best preserved in the song “Model Behavior” on the cast recording) is completely deserving of a Tony Award, and I’ve seen plenty of support for her. I think she will go home with her 2nd Tony on June 12.

30 Day Musical Theatre Song Challenge: Day 1

Hello everyone!! It’s been a while since my last blog. I haven’t forgotten you; I’ve just been extremely busy. For my big return, I will be participating in the 30 Day Musical Theatre Song Challenge, created for Facebook use.

The first day’s category is: a song from the first musical you saw/heard
My response: Macavity: The Mystery Cat from “Cats”

When I was five years old, my parents bought me the video of “Cats” as a birthday gift. I watched it multiple times every day for the next few months until I started school. Looking back, I don’t see how I could have loved such an awful show and how it could have made me fall in love with the theatre. Nevertheless, it shaped my life in a very positive way.

Post your responses to today’s challenge in the comments!

P.S. We are still attempting to fill several (volunteer) staff openings. Check out the page in our navigation bar for more information!

January Closings

It’s January, which means that several shows will close this month, including three of my favorite shows: A Little Night Music, Next to Normal, and In the Heights. I, unfortunately, am not able to travel to New York to say goodbye to these shows, but I will be listening to the cast recordings at home.

Which is your favorite show that is closing this month, and why? Post your thoughts in the comments!

Spider-Man: Kill Off the Cast

For those of you who have not heard, there was a very scary accident at Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Monday night. Christopher Tierney, one of the aerial doubles for the title character, fell 30 feet when a wire didn’t restrain him like it was supposed to. Actor’s Equity and the NY Department of Labor investigated, announced that the accident was caused by “human error” (stage crew not paying attention) and the show would cancel one performance to put in new safety protocol. Tierney is in stable condition, but has several broken ribs and bleeding.

Musical Search

A few years ago, I participated in an online competition called Musical Search, in which I finished in 3rd place. After that, I was given the duty of running the second season, which never took off. I am proud to announce that it is ready for launching!

What is Musical Search? Musical Search is an online singing competition, similar to American Idol. Contestants will sing songs from different categories of musicals each week. The performances will be posted online and voted on. The votes combined with the judge’s score will determine who is eliminated. Click here to find out how to audition. Auditions must be in by December 24. The 10 chosen contestants will be announced on December 29.

Until next time,

Jack

Macy’s Parade 2010

The 2010 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held yesterday and featured performances from four Broadway musicals.

1. Memphis performed “Steal Your Rock and Roll.” It’s time for them to start doing other songs for press. They’ve sung this song at almost every press event they have been a part of. It’s becoming boring, but their performances are always put together very well.

2. American Idiot performed “Good Riddance,” their curtain call song. They sound great on this song, which is not on the cast recording, but can be downloaded here. However, it sounds nothing like the rest of the show, so it may mislead viewers into buying tickets for a show they will hate.

3. Million Dollar Quartet performed a medley of songs from their show. It was not memorable at all. I hope this show closes in January. It does not deserve to be on Broadway, because it’s a jukebox musical about the writers of the music (like Jersey Boys). I’m not even going to bother reviewing this piece of junk.

4. Elf performed “Sparklejollytwinklejingley.” It was  cute and lead viewers into buying tickets to an enjoyable holiday show. I’ve yet to see the show, but based on the clips I’ve seen, it is cute, but not memorable. I enjoyed the song with the exception of the AWFUL dance break; the choreography was absolutely horrible. I felt bad for the ensemble. Although this number was enjoyable fro the most part, I wish Beth Leavel and Matthew Gumley would have performed “There is a Santa Claus,” which I still remember as being a highlight of this year’s Broadway on Broadway.

If you haven’t seen the performances, look them up on youtube and post your thoughts in the comments here.

Until next time,

Jack
